It is located in the Şanlıurfa province of the central-eastern Anatolia region of Turkey. History Dersim is a town which was named after the district and encompasses approximately 1,000 km². It is also known as the first capital of the Shappaligas, a group of five nomadic tribes in the 4th century BC. The Shappaligas conquered the Şanlıurfa in c. 350 BC and were the first Muslims in the Central Anatolia region. According to legend the Shappaligas were a small nomadic Turkic tribe that were converted to Islam by the prophet Muhammad in the early 7th century. The Dersim region was home to the Shappaligas, a confederacy of nomadic tribes from the ancient Turks. Other tribes that lived in the area around Dersim include the Eskikurgud, Sevdağaç, and Hacı Aliyan. The name Dersim itself is a derivation of the word Deşman meaning guest or guest of the deity; thus guests of the god. According to legend, the prophet Muhammad passed through Derinkuyu and was given the gift of a copper cauldron by the Shappaligas. The Turkish word dersim evokes the past and a sense of reverence and respect. The archaeological excavations of the Derinkuyu complex date back to the mid Neolithic, beginning with their first excavation by Charles Knight in 1857 and continuing until 1962. In 1967 the British Institute of Archaeology and the Turkish National Geographic Society started a larger scale excavation in the underground cavern, which lasted until 1981. From 1968 until its completion in 2011, it has become the world's largest archeological site. The inhabitants of Dersim practised subsistence agriculture and herding. Until the end of the 19th century, the Dersim region was home to almost one million Turkic-speaking inhabitants. Towards the d0c515b9f4
